In an extraordinary career spanning six decades, Roy has maintained his belief in cybernetic theory and its continuing relevance to contemporary life. It also informed his revolutionary ‘Groundcourse’, an art foundation course that incorporated cybernetics, behaviourism and play. Roy has been at the vanguard of art using technology during his career, but this use of technology is not the defining feature of his practice. Rather, it is his sustained interest in the field of human communication that led him to explore the potential of new technologies. Technology, Roy argues, is the product of desire; it is there to fulfil a human drive. In this conversation with Kate Sloan , Roy will discuss his early work in relation to the living, communicative and biological identity of early cybernetics, concentrating on his education and early years, pursuing the interrelationships between cybernetics, biology and sculptural form.

The dress is black tie. All serving and retired Fusilier Officers are encouraged to attend what promises to be another splendid evening. As with all projects of this type it is impossible to please all of the people all of the time. There will be those who do not like the design of the memorial, the size the shape and so on. Where I am sure there is common ground is that our Fusiliers who have lost their lives deserve a lasting and fitting memorial at the Arboretum and the small stone that is there currently does need replacing.
An experienced war memorial stonemason has been appointed; he has previously produced work at the National Arboretum and at the Somme and is highly respected for the quality of his work. Meetings have been held with the Arboretum Authorities who have agreed the general size, shape and design of the new memorial. We are still in negotiation with them over whether it can be put into the same location as the current memorial, but early indications are that this is achievable.
An artist’s impression of the new Memorial is shown below. It is made from a single piece of dark grey curved granite which ill be polished. The dimensions will be approx 8 ft wide and 6 ft high.

Eagle-eyed — and lucky — seafarers could catch a glimpse of minke whales, harbour porpoises, and there has even been an occasional humpback whale sighting. Here are some of the marine mammals that can be spotted off the North East coast. Minke whales Found throughout the Northern hemisphere, minke whales have a sharply pointed snout, straight mouthline and a long ridge along the head with two blowholes.
They generally measure seven to 10 metres when fully grown. Females are usually slightly longer than males. Minke whales are generally solitary, although they can sometimes be seen in feeding groups of up to 10 animals. Their typical dive sequence is five to eight blows at intervals of less than a minute, followed by a dive which usually lasts three to eight minutes.
Some minke whales appear to be inquisitive around boats and will sometimes come close and even spy-hop raise just the head out of the water to investigate. Humpback whales There have been very occasional sightings of humpback whales in the North Sea – renowned for being one of the most energetic of the large whales with its spectacular breaching, lobtailing and flipper-slapping. The humpback whale can be distinguished by its large size, knobbly head and 5m long flippers. Male humpbacks sing the longest, most complex songs in the animal kingdom.

The scheme is quite significant in its own right but the thinking behind it also says a lot about current ideas on how best to use limited highway space in central London. Here we take a look at the issues of this particular scheme and the significance it may have for developments in the future. Going back to the beginning Tottenham Court Road was named quite simply because it was the road from St Giles at the eastern extremity of Oxford Street to a mansion called Tottenham Court. We can also presume it was demolished before the coming of the Euston Road then called New Road.
By then the road must have had some local strategic importance. Gower Street was and is a significant road in its own right with many historical figures having lived there and much of University College London being based along the road.

Welcome to Brinnington, a part of Stockport where the troubles faced by the pub industry are on stark display. The area is the type of close knit, working-class district where the local was once the bastion of socialising but its last pub shut 18 months ago. And across Greater Manchester, time is being called ever more loudly for the pub trade.
Cheap supermarket booze, business rates, and changing tastes have all taken their toll on the traditional British boozer. But since this time there has been a net loss of venues – a fall of nearly 14 per cent, much more marked than the national decline of 11pc. With many feeling the pinch of nearly a decade of austerity, pub landlords say many of their regular patrons – and new figures from the Office of National Statistics in May revealed how the proportion of adults who regularly drink alcohol is at the lowest level of on record.
Back in Brinnington, residents are still licking their wounds after a hard-fought but unsuccessful campaign to save the last pub, The Jack and Jill. When the licensees left, its owners Robinsons decided that the business was no longer viable. But a planning application has now been approved to knock it down and build 10 new homes. Stockport has lost almost a third of its pubs to over the last six years. Chris Murphy, a local councillor who has lived in Brinnington all his life, says the area has now had to find a new focal point at community centres and residents groups.
